MacBook Goes Into Sleep Mode when DockedUpdated 8 months ago

If your MacBook is unexpectedly entering sleep mode while connected to a docking station, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ensure Proper Power Connection:

    • Always keep your MacBook connected to a power source when using a docking station, especially in closed-lid mode.
    • Check that the power cable is securely connected to both the docking station and the power outlet.
    • If your docking station doesn't provide power, connect the MacBook's charger directly to the laptop.

  2. Adjust macOS Sleep Settings:

    For macOS Ventura and later:
    • Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen
    • Set "Turn display off on battery when inactive" to a longer duration
    • Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Battery
    • Click on "Options" next to "Low Power Mode"
    • Ensure "Turn display off on power adapter when inactive" is set to a longer duration

      For earlier macOS versions:
    • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Battery
    • Select "Power Adapter" from the left sidebar
    • Adjust "Turn display off after" to a longer duration
    • Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" and "Enable Power Nap"

  3. Check Energy Saver Settings:

    • In System Settings or System Preferences, look for "Energy Saver" or "Battery" settings
    • Disable "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" and "Enable Power Nap" while on power adapter

  4. Verify Display Settings:

    • Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays
    • Ensure "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off" is checked

  5. Update macOS and Docking Station Firmware:

    • Keep your macOS and docking station firmware up to date to ensure compatibility and resolve known issues

  6. Check for Interfering Applications:

    • Some third-party apps can affect sleep behavior. Try disconnecting unnecessary peripherals and closing unused apps to isolate the issue

  7. Test Without the Docking Station:

    • If the issue persists, try using your MacBook without the docking station to determine if it's a hardware-specific problem

  8. Check for Hardware Issues:

    • Ensure the docking station and all cables are functioning correctly
    • Try a different port on your MacBook if available
