Dock or Adapters Not Working with MacBookUpdated 8 months ago

If you're using a MacBook with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, or M3 chip) and experiencing issues with docks or adapters, it may be due to a security feature introduced in macOS Ventura and continued in Sonoma.

Here's how to resolve this:

  1. Understanding the issue:

    • Apple Silicon Macs require approval for new USB or Thunderbolt devices.
    • This security feature protects your Mac from potentially malicious accessories.

  2. How to allow accessories:

    a. Click on the Apple menu in the top-left corner
    b. Select "System Settings".

    c. Click on "Privacy & Security".

    d. Scroll down to find "Allow accessories to connect".

    e. Click the pop-up menu next to this option.

    f. Choose either:

    • "Automatically when unlocked" (recommended for most users)
    • "Always" (for maximum convenience, slightly lower security)

  3. After changing this setting:

    • Disconnect and reconnect your dock or adapter.
    • It should now work without further prompts.
